About ArctosKastoria Project

The implementation of the project titled “Improving conditions of bear-human coexistence in Kastoria Prefecture, Greece - Transfer of best practices” is taking place in Kastoria with emphasis on areas of permanent or seasonal presence of brown bears (Ursus arctos). The lifetime of the project is from October 1, 2010 to March 30 2015.

Basic objectives

The project will implement a series of actions and apply specific measures aimed primarily at:

 Α.Reduce - eliminate the phenomenon of road accidents involving bears in the road network of Kastoria and, of course, increase road safety for drivers.

 Β. Addressing incidents of bears approaching populated areas.

 C. Dissemination of implementing measures to prevent damage to the rural environment by bears and improve the conditions of human coexistence with wildlife in the prefecture of Kastoria.

 D. Increasing/enhancing public awareness on these issues.

Maximum project cost: 1.128.326 Euros

European Committee’s Contribution: 75%

European Committee’s Contribution: 846.244 Euros
